Analysis of Common Spoken Language in Kroměříž and its Surroundings

The aim of this bachelor thesis was to find and analyze the everyday speech of people living in Kroměříž and its surroundings. This thesis includes a brief description of the researched area and its history. The theoretical part focuses on the description of dialectology, the national language and the division of dialectical groups. The methodology of research is included in the practical part as well as the analyses of the everyday speech, which was achieved by the dialectical questionnare. Common spoken language in Boršov nad Vltavou

The aim of this bachelor thesis was to determine and describe characteristic dialectal features in the everyday speech of respondents living in the village Boršov nad Vltavou. For this purpose, the recordings of respondents and their subsequent analysis, located in the practical part of the thesis, were used. In this part we can also find information about the current state of the vocabulary of the inhabitants of the village. The vocabulary questionnaire was completed by fifteen respondents and then analysed. In the theoretical part, the location, history and monuments of the village Boršov nad Vltavou located in southern Bohemia were presented. Furthermore, the thesis also contains a brief description of the Czech southwestern dialects.

PhDr. Ivan Klimeš Abstract: The subject of this diploma thesis is a reflection on the possible uses of spoken language in films aimed at dialect as one of the substandard forms of Czech national language. In particular, the thesis focuses on the use of Moravian dialectal elements in the language of the film characters in Czech acted cinema made in the 1930s and 1940s. It evaluates the Moravian applied dialect from the phonetic and lexical point of view and analyses its function. The aim of the thesis is an evaluation and generalization of the possible uses of dialectal elements in cinematographic work. Czech translation of dialects in feature films and TV series

The thesis studies Czech dubbing of Misfits and Futurama TV series with special attention to the method of translation of regional varieties of English. The first part summarizes the latest theoretical approach to translation of marginal varieties in dubbing and literature. This overview is followed by an analysis of language varieties used in the original series and their dubbed versions in order to define their role and function. The second part of the thesis examines decision-making processes employed in the process of translation of the regional varieties and presents the results of a survey of spectators' opinion on the translation method employed. Based on the survey results we compared spectators' evaluation of the original series with their evaluation of the dubbed versions, as well as markings of characters using regional varieties with markings of those using standard language. Last but not least, markings of the dubbed versions in the regions where the variety in question is spoken were compared with markings of these versions in the rest of the Czech Republic. The aim of the comparisons was to get an overview of recipients' opinions on the method of translation applied.

Pronunciation Features of Czech Language - Dialect Analysis

We implemented Výrče:SW, a tool for collecting and analysing audio recordings without the necessity of supervisor's assistance. The tool allows creating a wide range of recording scenarios, including the possibility to analyse the recordings and show the results. Using the created tool, we collected Výrče:Korpus, a read audio corpus of 34 speakers and 2376 utterances of 7 hours in length. The corpus also includes questionnaires that provide information about the dialect reliability of speakers. Sufficient amounts of speakers for dialect analysis are from the Central Bohemian dialect area and Silesian dialect area. Current status of speech of the oldest generation in the microregion of Lomnice (under the Giant Mountains)

This M.A. thesis contributes to the research of regional marked features in the region under the Giant Mountains (Podkrkonoší), which is a part of the north-eastern dialectal group of the Czech language. The aim of the thesis is to describe spontaneous language of the speakers both in rural (Nová Ves nad Popelkou, Syřenov, Újezdec, Žďár u Kumburku) and urban areas (Lomnice nad Popelkou, Semily), with special regard to phonology and morphology. The research was restricted to the oldest generation only, that means to the people who were born in 1951 and earlier. The data were obtained by recording semi- structured interviews with informants. These data were then analyzed, compared and described in terms of Common Czech, regional and local dialect features. One part of the thesis consists of short description of the idiolect of each spokesman and of speech samples of informants. The results of the research are presented separately for each feature for both groups investigated (rural and urban speakers). In the conclusion of the thesis, the author summarizes the results gained. The rural speakers of the Lomnice microregion still use some dialectal features typical for the region under the Giant Mountains (Podkrkonoší), whereas in the urban areas these features are not present to such a high degree....

Gender variation of selected Czech toponyms ending with a soft or ambiguous consonant

In Czech, the assignment of grammatical gender to certain place names ending in (what is known as) soft or hybrid consonants is inconsistent, especially in the spoken language. These toponyms used to be treated as masculine nouns but today are overwhelmingly codified as feminine nouns. The present paper takes a look at the way these toponyms are described in linguistic guides and compendia which specify their gender, their origination and their meaning, or describe their use in local dialects. Based on the data in those manuals, the author has created a list of gender-shifting toponyms, with a brief specification of the grammatical gender and colloquial use (exactly as described in the said manuals), so as to allow for their easy comparison. Selected toponyms (which are analyzed in more detail in the grammatical guides, or which were assigned a different gender by different guides and compendia) are the subject of a broader discussion within the context of this work. In another section, the present work references the results of an internet questionnaire designed to map the actual use of grammatical gender for these toponyms by native speakers. Localisation of Version D of "The Poema Morale" based on "The Linguistic Atlas of Early Middle English"

The present MA thesis presents an analysis of version D of the Early Middle English verse sermon known as the Poema Morale. The objectives of the study were to verify the present localisation of D in Western Kent and clarify its relations to two more copies of the same text (T and M). The research consistsed in analysing the language of the text it terms of its dialect and distinguishing between different layers of copying, where possible. The analysis was performed using the electronic tool Linguistic Atlas of Early Middle English, specific procedures included mainly analyses of maps showing the distribution of dialectal features found in D, which were complemented by discussions of forms which D shares with other Kentish texts or versions T and M. The aim of these discussions was the identification of words coming from the exemplar. Evidence supporting the localisation of D in Kent as well as forms presumably taken from the archetype were presented and put in the context of the results of previous studies.

The issue of regional identity of the inhabitants of the Czech region Těšínsko and its reflection in the documentary Hranice po našimu

The diploma thesis deals with the issue of regional identity of the inhabitants of the Czech part of Teschen Silesia in connection with the documentary film Hranice po našimu. The aim of the thesis is to analyse the reaction of local inhabitants to this documentary and to trace how the topic of identity and local dialect was represented both in the discussion and the film itself. The reaction of the locals is analysed mainly using the internet discussion which developed on the Czech Television's official website after the broadcast of the film, as well as using available journalistic articles and official statements of Teschen institutions. The thesis also focuses on the inclination of some local inhabitants to create a regional form of identity which can replace the identification with cultures of the nation states. The thesis is based on the hypothesis that the creation of such regional identity is one of the possible escape strategies the locals might use to avoid a certain form of ethnic diction. This regional identity carries its own cultural elements, one of the most significant being the aforementioned local dialect which the thesis concentrates on.
